3 Acne Home Remedies I Highly Recommend

Acne home remedies are the cheapest ways to treat your skin problem. There are three major ways to improve your skin condition using home ingredients. On the other hand, it is equally important that you take note of each ingredient. It is then vital that you choose the treatment that would not pose further irritation to your skin. Otherwise, your allergies may be triggered leading to worsening your acne.

#1 - Herbal treatment and medicinal plants

Almost all types of diseases and illnesses can be treated with these ingredients. Do not be scared to explore these medicinal plants as these have been used over hundreds of years since the earliest civilizations begun to treat other wounds and skin problems. Acne home remedies with the use of different herbs do not only prevent further pimple breakouts but save your money as well. Some plants could even come right from your own garden or kitchen. Here are some herbal treatments:

Among the hundreds of aloe varieties, the aloe barbadensis and aloe arborescens are most effective in treating acne. They both have natural cooling gel inside their leaves but the former puts out better results. This is easy to apply. Cut down a whole leaf and slit it down the middle until yellow latex oozes. Use the juice. You can also remove the skin of the leaf and gel will come out. Rinse the gel under cold water. Apply generously on affected areas.

Peppermint and spearmint are effective acne home remedies too due to their menthol content that serves as anti-inflammation. Crush several leaves until an ample amount of juice comes out. Apply this onto affected area and leave for 5-10 minutes.

Lastly, the nettle leaves can be used two ways - as tea or in pill form. Remember to use gloves when handling fresh leaves as these have natural inflammatory properties. Pour boiling water over a handful of leaves. Let it soak for 5 minutes then drink it with honey or lemon. There are also available tea bags but are less effective. When you purchase dried nettle pills, be sure to drink lots of water when taking them.

#2 - Natural concoctions

You can mix your own acne home remedies using fruits, spices and ready foods. Some of the popular mixtures are:

1. equal parts of lemon juice and rose water; 15-30 minute application
2. pre-cooked single serving of plain oatmeal and ¼ cup honey; 10-20 minute application
3. honey and cinnamon powder paste; overnight application
4. unboiled milk and gram flour; daily wash
5. fresh fenugreek leaves and water; overnight application

#3 - Vitamin and mineral supplements

Among the acne home remedies, this last suggestion is the easiest to maintain. All you have to do is to include regular intake of vitamins C and E, and mineral zinc with your daily diet. Antioxidants in these help skin rejuvenation.

Combine these suggestions with a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables and fresh juice. Exclude oily and fatty foods that could trigger sebaceous glands to secrete more skin oil. In no time at all, you can see your skin improved a lot better.

N-Acetyl Cysteine

N-Acetyl Cysteine

May also be konown as: Acetylcysteine, NAC

What N-Acetyl Cysteine Does

N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is an altered form of amino acidcysteine, which is frequently found in food and synthesized by the body.

N-Acetyl Cysteine aids the breaking down mucus. Double-blind research has found that N-Acetyl Cysteine supplements improve symptoms and prevent recurrences in people with chronic bronchitis. NAC may also protect lung tissue through its antioxidant activity.

N-Acetyl Cysteine assists the body to synthesize glutathione, an important antioxidant. In animals, the antioxidant activity of N-Acetyl Cysteine protects the liver from the adverse effects of exposure to several toxic chemicals. NAC also protects the body from acetaminophen toxicity and is used at very high levels in hospitals for patients with acetaminophen poisoning. It has also been shown to be effective at treating liver failure from causes other than acetaminophen poisoning (e.g., hepatitis, and other drug toxicity) and at preventing kidney damage caused by injections of iopromide, a contrast medium used in people scheduled to undergo computerized tomography (CT) imaging.

Supplementation with N-Acetyl Cysteine has been shown to reduce the proliferation of certain cells lining the colon and may reduce the risk of colon cancer in people with recurrent polyps in the colon.

Where is N-Acetyl Cysteine found?

Cysteine, the amino acid from which NAC is derived, is found in most high-protein foods. NAC is not found in the diet.

N-Acetyl Cysteine Uses

N-acetyl cysteine has been used in connection with the following conditions: bronchitis, angina pectoris, gastritis.

Who is likely to be deficient?

Deficiencies of NAC have not been defined and may not exist. Deficiencies of the related amino acidcysteine have been reported in HIV-infected patients.

Make your bed and suffer.

This is off-topic but I love this story!

Untidy beds may keep us healthy

Failing to make your bed in the morning may actually help keep you healthy, scientists believe.

...A Kingston University study discovered the bugs cannot survive in the warm, dry conditions found in an unmade bed.

Untidy beds may keep us healthy

On some level, I knew this all along! ;-)

Thoughts about being skeptic and skepticism

Skepticism is based on the principle that knowledge is testable and that ideas and beliefs can be replaced if they are wrong.

Skeptics are people who want to make sure, that what they believe in and know is most likely that accords with reality. They like facts to be correct.

To be skeptic does not mean, that you don"t want to believe in anything. On the other side if you believe in something wrong, it can be hard to accept because your emotional investments in the case. As a skeptic you will have to accept reality and not to be emotional influenced.

Why is some people skeptic and some people not ?

Discussing problems with energy medicines

Energy medicine is a concept developed by the alternative world. It"s based on the blind faith that the health of body, mind, and spirit are anchored in the body"s energy systems. The word energy in the alternative world appears as a magic word used for various things, ranging from the patient"s good mood to heat from the healer"s hand. Nobody usually waste their time searching for any definition and the word energy isn"t used as a defined physical quantity.

One of the problems I have with "energy medicine" is similar to the one I have with "psychic predictions". The concepts is contradictory to some pretty elemental laws of physics, that have not been "broken" since the beginning of the universe.

In the case of "energy medicine", the problem is one of thermodynamics. We can rather easily calculate the minimum amount of energy needed to perform a task, that the "energy medicine" proponents claim to do. What we cannot find is any place or thing that is giving up this energy or any evidence that the energy has been received by the "patient" - nor can we detect any transfer of energy.

In this physical world we might accept the fact that nothing is 100% efficient. As a result, anyone "channeling" this energy, from wherever it may come, will have to deal with the inefficiency of energy transfer. In this universe, inefficient transfer of energy usually ends up as heat. It means that the hands, feet or heads of the "energy practitioner" should become warmer while they are practicing their "craft". In fact, this heat has not been detected.

For "psychic predictions" another problem arises. The ability to "see the future" would imply that the future has already been determined. That, in turn, would require a major revision of quantum mechanics, which states that the future is indeterminate.

So, if "psychics" could really "see into the future", then there would be no reason to punish people for breaking the law, or save for retirement, or do anything at all other than what we want to do at the moment, since the future has already been laid down and is immutable.

If I can"t do anything to change my future, then I"m not responsible, and any effort is futile. Then, if the future is not already fixed, what"s the point of a "psychic prediction"? How can I base plans on the possibility that something might happen, but is more likely not to happen?

In my view, all evidence for energy based medicines such as homeopathy, crystal therapy and reflexology should be taken as evidence for the power of suggestion or blind faith and nothing more.

Usage of calcium and vitamin D one year is of benefit to bone break patient

Based on finding publicized in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition edition July 2007, usage of calcium and vitamin D a yearlong reduces loss a period of bone between patients with light bone break. Vesting of this calcium and D vitamin increases bone mineral density ( bone mineral density = BMD) at patient age less than 70 years and reduces keropos bone at older patient.

Dr. Mette F Hitz, from Copenhagen University Hospital Hvidovre, denmark and its(the kolega writing, broken light bone at hip, arm, shoulder, and backbone has been known is osteoporosis consequence. Broken hipbone happened in part big old fellow as as result of calcium deficiencies risk and vitamin D.

In double blind study, the researchers tests handling effect of calcium and vitamin D during 1 year at bone mineral density and bone marker out of 122 patients that is recently experiences light bone break. Participant is tested at random to receive 3000 plus calcium carbonate magnesiums 1400 IU ko-kalsiferol or placebo. In analysing intention-to-treat, backbone bone mineral density increases at cluster intervenced and downdraft happened at group of placebo. Difference haves a meaning (of) between both clusters happened after 12 months. There is no alteration haves a meaning (of) for hipbone mineral density.

Team reports that compilation based on age shows effect which more real from handling ( backbone bone mineral density) at patients age less than 70 years compared to them age more than 70 years. They also finds that alteration of bone mineral density at backbone relates to performa physical, what emphasizes the importance of movement ( mobilization).

The researchers emphasizes that because of weakness of patients age more than 70 years is not many moving, so that they cannot reduce absorbtion of bone and increases bone mass when handled with calcium and vitamin D. The importance of mechanical loading of which is enough has been shown in trial-trial klinis. Vesting effect of calcium and vitamin D decreases if patients is not many moving.

TENS machines

I received this qiestion from a visitor to our online health shop:

Please tell me what is the difference between TENS used in pregnancy, and
other TENS available.

The answer is in fact very simple: the pregnancy TENS uses bigger pads and has a boost function for when you experience the pains associated with contractions. Most pregnancy TENS machines can also be used after childbirth as a regular TENS machine for sciatica, back pian, etc.

Fish Oils For Cardiovascular Health

It"s usually a common fact that what is best for your body is also what is best for the planet. Eating organic foods instead of processed foods; eating less food overall; and using natural medicine from herbs and nutrients to heal illnesses instead of hazardous pharmaceuticals: are god for the environment and also good for your health. However, there are a few exceptions to this rule. At first glance, one exception is eating fish and taking fish oil supplements. Although these fish oils are a huge benefit to the human body, the toll that fishing is taking on marine ecosystems is far less beneficial to fish populations. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, almost three-quarters of the world"s fish species are gone to a point of no return.

Fish oils are the only abundant natural source of the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA. Because most modern diets usually contain abundant omega-6 fatty acids these fatty acids are very low in most people"s diets. Omega-3s work as anti-inflammatory and promote good nerve transmission, heart function, and relaxed, open blood vessels, while omega-6s tend to do the opposite. By using fish oil supplements to raise levels of DHA and EPA, virtually every system of the body is benefited and protected against disease processes. These oils are currently being studied for their use in treatments against high cholesterol, depression, hypertension, and bipolar disorder. The growing popularity of these amazingly healthy foods, along with the ever-increasing pollution and habitat destruction are, together, creating a dangerous depletion of fish in our oceans.

So should we stop eating fish oil? If we do, we"ll be depriving ourselves of one of the world"s most beneficial foods, which helps our cardiovascular system, bones, joints, skin, energy levels, healthy pregnancy, visual acuity, hormone balance, psychological health, thinking ability, and sexual and emotional health. Fortunately, there is an alternative in getting your omega-3s. The answer is through buying your fish oil from a company that is dedicated to sustainable fish practices. Omega-3 is found in fish oil and flax seeds. Some fish oil suppliers use a reef netting to catch Puget Sound salmon, which has been practiced by native people of the northwest for centuries using boats and nets made from cedar. Reef netting has been declared the "best sustainable fishing method in practice today" by the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife. Reef nets mimic natural barriers that salmon routinely navigate, where they are caught and taken to a holding tank on the deck of the boat within minutes. Any by catch is then quickly and easily returned to sea unharmed. Fish oils should be made from anchovy and sardines that have been harvested from the coast of Peru, while their Cod Liver Oil is sourced from Artic cod off the coast of Norway, all of which have very healthy populations. A reputable company will make sure to choose where they source their fish oils, picking only the cleanest, purest fish to provide to consumers. After the oil arrives at a company, it goes through at least five different purification processes which eliminate any toxins and prevent spoilage before distillation.

Challenge me

So I kind of want to cook something. I just can"t decide what. I tend to have a few things I cook a lot and put them in rotation. But as much as I like a good stir fry, they all tend to be variations on a theme. So I want something new.

A couple of weeks ago, I was thinking about doing a roast, but that"s a lot of meat and three weeks worth of leftovers would get tiring after a while. On the other hand, you could do a lot with all of that.

So does anyone have any suggestions?

Healing Secrets - Headaches Cure by Yoga

Certain yoga postures are beneficial for certain kinds of headaches. Sinus, for example, which often causes headache, may be greatly benefited by Sirshasana, the headstand.
Headaches caused by impurities in the blood may be overcome by deep yogic breathing, feeling the air coming up close to the brain, cooling it. Sitali Pranayama may also prove helpful in such cases. (Fold up the partially protruded tongue. Press the lips round the tongue.
Inhale, making a hissing noise. Hold breath and exhale through both nostrils.) It may help you to stimulate energy in the brain by rapping the skull all over with the knuckles, drawing energy mentally from the medulla oblongata.
You may also rub the scalp briskly, stirring up energy in the cells while affirming, Awake, my sleeping children, wake! Yogis say that long hair draws more energy to the brain.
They describe the body as an inverted tree of which the spine is the trunk, the nervous system the branches, and the hair the roots. This is why many yogis let their hair grow long.
There are pressure points on the skull that can be felt, subjectively. On the sides, these points are located about an inch above the ears. In the forehead, the pressure point is in the middle of the forehead. In the back, it is about an inch above the depression at the base of the skull.
Ask someone to find these pressure points on your head, and press inward upon them with the heels of his palms (or with his fingers).
This helps overcome certain headaches. The person should feel, as he presses, that he is forcing the pain up through the top of the head and out of your body. Headaches are often caused by alimentary disturbances such as constipation.
The stomach should be kept clear and functioning well, for the sake not only of the stomach, but the head and the whole body too. Many headaches are due to pressure on the nerves in the neck.
A chiropractic adjustment may sometimes be indicated, but a variety of yoga postures may serve the purpose as well. Specifically recommended are:
Halasana (Plow pose); Sarvangasana (shoulder stand); Bhujangasana (Cobra pose); Chakrasana (circle pose); Matsyasana (Fish pose); Supta-Vajrasana (supine firm pose); and the first position of Sasamgasana (Hare pose).

Geopathic Stress Book

It"s interesting to see that someone is selling my original book on ebay with a "buy it now" price of US Dollars 88!

It"s cheaper and makes more sense to buy my latest version of this book - enlarged with lots of new material. You can buy it from many booksellers or direct from my health web site.

Dean

It looks like Dean is a lock for the head of the DNC. But I just saw on CNN yet again the famous footage of the Dean Scream, as they"re doing a bit of a story on him. I mean, really, are we ever going to be shown Dean on the news without a clip of that? The guy mobilized Democrats in a way not really ever seen before, and was one of the first people to effectively use the Internet to get out his message (a blog) and to rainse funding. And yet all we see is that arm wave and a high pitched, "Yeahhh!" When George Bush I is on TV, we don"t get cut-away clips of him vomiting in the Japanese Prime Minister"s lap, the pretzel jokes about Bush II stopped fairly quickly, and Bob Dole fell off a fucking stage. How come we don"t see the clip of that anymore?

Liberal media, my big fat ass.

How to Remove Blackheads? - Discover These Effective Remedies That Deliver Real Results!

Steaming and cleansing is one of the best ways to remove your blackheads. If you are attempting to remove the blackheads yourself make sure you use sterile materials. If you are still unsure of how to remove your blackheads it would be better to consult a local dermatologist.

How To Remove Blackheads, Incongruities & Irritations

Blackheads are the first stage of acne. They occur mostly because of the hormonal changes in your body or the excess of oil on the skin. There are many conditions that may cause or even worsen blackheads. Some of these causes can be the use of oily makeup or an unhygienic lifestyle. Blackheads are most likely to develop on people with very oily skin.

Causes

Blackheads usually develop on oily skin. Hormonal changes also play a big part in the formation of blackheads. They also appear because of insufficient cleaning of the skin. When you do not take care of your skin properly, the dead skin cells accumulate within the pores. These dead cells in turn clog the pore's opening which secretes the oil in excess, which forms the blackheads.

Another cause can be the excess use of makeup on oily skin. If your skin is not oily and you are getting blackheads, it means that you are using an excess of oily makeup not suitable for your skin. Moisturizers, foundations and sunscreens should be used that suit your skin type.

Preventions

Cleansing is essential for your skin especially before going to bed. Too much scrubbing has been found to be one of the reasons that result in skin blemishes. Excessive oil is not beneficial as our skin needs only a small amount of oil to keep it healthy.

Therefore, regular cleansing is recommended for everyone. You should be cleansing your skin every night regardless of whether you have blackheads or not. Initial signs of blackheads can be hard to spot so try to make your skin clean and clear with a healthy diet and by drinking plenty of water. If your skin is dirty you will see the bumps come out of the skin in the form of blackheads.

Therefore, it is advised to ensure that your living environment is extremely clean.

Professionals can offer deep cleansing facial treatments designed to keep skin clear of blackheads. The cost of these treatments may be a little high for your budget, but most are happy with the results and feel it is worth it in the long run. Keeping blemish free skin can be achieved if you stick to a well balanced routine of cleansing, eating well and keeping active. The question of 'how to remove blackheads' will be a thing of the past.

Supplements and Knee Pain

There"s another article I have found that I want to share with you. The title is "Supplements May Help Relieve Moderate-to-Severe Knee Pain". I think it has very interesting information. It says.....

A combination of the popular dietary supplements glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate appears to relieve knee pain associated with moderate-to-severe arthritis, according to a large federally funded study.
The results of the study of more than 1,600 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee, however, showed that the supplements don"t significantly relieve knee pain and other symptoms suffered by people with milder arthritis.

The study"s authors, led by Dr. Daniel Clegg of the University of Utah, cautioned that the 354 patients in the moderate-to-severe group was considered small and that a larger study of patients with more severe osteoarthritis would need to be conducted before concluding the supplements really work.
The study"s results are being published today in the New England Journal of Medicine.

"This rigorous, large-scale study showed that the combination of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate appeared to help people with moderate-to-severe pain from knee osteoarthritis, but not those with mild pain," said Stephen Straus, the director of the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, one of the two National Institutes of Health units that paid for the study.

More than 20 million Americans suffer from osteoarthritis, a degenerative disease caused by the breakdown of cartilage in between the joints, and at least five million of them use glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate.
Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are natural substances found in cartilage. The supplements are made from material extracted from shellfish and animal cartilage.

The study followed about 1,600 patients for six months. They were assigned to receive one of five treatments daily: glucosamine alone, chondroitin sulfate alone, a combination of the two supplements, a placebo, or Pfizer Inc"s Celebrex. Researchers measured improvement as a 20% reduction of pain at six months compared to the start of the study.

The study found that, overall, there were no significant differences between the supplements and the placebo. Researchers found that those taking Celebrex experienced statistically significant pain relief compared to those taking placebo. About 70% of patients taking Celebrex reported pain relief compared to 60% in the placebo group. But researchers said 79% of the 72 patients in the moderate-to-severe pain subgroup who took the glucosamine combined with chondroitin sulfate reported pain reduction compared to 54% in the placebo group.

John Hathcock, the vice president of scientific affairs for the Council for Responsible Nutrition, a Washington group that represents supplement makers, said glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are typically sold as a combined supplement by most large manufacturers. Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate products are among the top 10 nutritional supplements in terms of annual sales. Americans shelled out $734 million for the products in 2004, according to the Nutrition Business Journal.

Dr. Clegg said he and other researchers are conducting a smaller study to see whether glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate can stop or slow the progression of osteoarthritis. Results from that study should be available in about a year.

CoCa Cola Ads

The UK Advertising Standards Authority has found against Coca Cola this week. The findings are in relation to 3 posters and a leaflet featuring Coca Cola"s Vitaminwater range of soft drinks. You can see the full judgement here, but below is an exerpt

"We noted Coca-Cola"s assertion that the product could be defined as "low calorie"; however, we also noted from the ingredient breakdown supplied that the products contained 4.6 g sugar per 100 ml or 23 g per 500 ml serving which constituted 26% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) based on 2000 calories per day. We considered that the appearance of the product, its colour, and the fact that it was fortified with vitamins made it clear to consumers that they were not "pure" water without calories or sugar. However, because we considered the ads made claims that were likely to be understood as referring to the nutritional and health benefits of the drinks, it was likely that, in conjunction with these claims, readers would infer that the range of drinks were "healthy". Because the drinks contained a significant proportion of a consumers RDA for sugar we concluded the ads were likely to mislead."

What a great way to start the week

So it turns out that the water company didn"t actually do their scheduled repair on Friday. Unfortunately, they didn"t tell anyone that. So Monday, just as I"m leaving for work, the water pressure just goes out. Great. They also didn"t warn anyone that they would be turning off the water. So not only was I avoiding using my water supply for half the weekend, I got to do it all over again at the beginning of the week, but without having laid in a supply of clean water. Thanks, guys.

Avoid Dying Before Your Time

Smoking, high blood pressure and being overweight are the leading preventable risk factors for premature mortality in the United States, according to a new study led by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH), with collaborators from the University of Toronto and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington. The researchers found that smoking is responsible for 467,000 premature deaths each year, high blood pressure for 395,000, and being overweight for 216,000. The effects of smoking work out to be about one in five deaths in American adults, while high blood pressure is responsible for one in six deaths.

It is the most comprehensive study yet to look at how diet, lifestyle and metabolic risk factors for chronic disease contribute to mortality in the U.S. The study appears in the April 28, 2009 edition of the open-access journal PLoS Medicine.

"The large magnitude of the numbers for many of these risks made us pause," said Goodarz Danaei, a doctoral student at HSPH and the lead author of the study. "To have hundreds of thousands of premature deaths caused by these modifiable risk factors is shocking and should motivate a serious look at whether our public health system has sufficient capacity to implement interventions and whether it is currently focusing on the right set of interventions." Majid Ezzati, associate professor of international health at HSPH, is the study"s senior author.

The researchers also found large effects from a series of other preventable dietary and lifestyle risk factors. Below are the numbers of deaths in the U.S. due annually to each of the individual risk factors examined:

Smoking: 467,000
High blood pressure: 395,000
Overweight-obesity: 216,000
Inadequate physical activity and inactivity: 191,000
High blood sugar: 190,000
High LDL cholesterol: 113,000
High dietary salt: 102,000
Low dietary omega-3 fatty acids (seafood): 84,000
High dietary trans fatty acids: 82,000
Alcohol use: 64,000 (alcohol use averted a balance of 26,000 deaths from heart disease, stroke and diabetes, because moderate drinking reduces risk of these diseases. But these deaths were outweighed by 90,000 alcohol-related deaths from traffic and other injuries, violence, cancers and a range of other diseases).
Low intake of fruits and vegetables: 58,000
Low dietary poly-unsaturated fatty acids: 15,000

All of the deaths calculated in the study were considered premature or preventable in that the victims would not have died when they did if they had not been subject to the behaviors or activities linked to their deaths.

More anti-science from the News-Gazette

Every once in a while, I poke my head in to the News-Gazette blogs. I"m not sure why; they"re usually just about sports and weather and are only intermittently updated. (These people aren"t actually paid to blog, are they?) One of the more disappointing ones is Rhonda Robinson"s. Her history of promoting creationism, anti-vaccination, anti-contraception, and oh-my-god-the-Muslims-are-coming paranoia never fails to make me shake my head and fear for the future of the children she homeschools.

A couple of weeks ago, she came out with a blog entry about how recent school shootings are caused by the use of antidepressants. She has no actual information, but supports her conclusion through innuendo, insinuation, conspiracy-theories, and an appeal to alternative (i.e. ineffective) medicine.

Here is the sum total of her argument:

No doubt there will be calls for more gun control, tighter security, but what I want to know most is will they look in [NIU shooter Steven Kazmierczak"s] medicine cabinet.

The overwhelming majority of adolescent and young adult shooters have all been on, or withdrawing from psychotropic medications.

That"s the totality of her argument. These shooters were taking psychiatric medications, therefore the medications are at fault for the shootings. The fact that these men were taking antidepressants for a reason doesn"t seem to register with her. The fact that they were actually mentally ill is, apparently, irrelevant.

Her appeal to authority is rich, too. She cites Julian Whitaker when he says:

...guns and movies don"t cause these tragically frequent episodes of inexplicable violence. The real reason is written out on a prescription pad by psychiatrists and doctors all over the country-these monstrous acts were done not by criminals, but ordinary people high on prescription drugs.

What she doesn"t mention is that Whitaker is an alternative medicine quack, who treats people by means of diet and exercise changes, nutritional supplements, and chelation therapies. He actually believes there is a conspiracy among drug companies to over-proscribe psychiatric medications to children.

I"m not suggesting that psychiatric medications can"t have serious side effects, or that they"re not over-proscribed. I"m just saying that jumping to the conclusion that these shootings were caused by these medications based on no other evidence that the shooters were taking these medications, and ignoring the fact that they had underlying mental illnesses, is an example of poor critical thinking. Using that kind of logic to propose these medications be outlawed, as Whitaker does, is reckless and irresponsible.

Robinson doesn"t mention that the two deadliest mass shootings in US history, the 1966 University of Texas Clock Tower shooting and the 1968 California State, Fullerton massacre, were both perpetrated by men who were seriously mentally ill, before the age of antidepressants. One was committed by a man who was depressed and had a brain tumor, the other committed by a paranoid schizophrenic. Undoubtedly, if their cases were discovered today they, too, would be on antidepressants. But that doesn"t mean you can blame the violence on Prozac.

UPDATE: Just reacting to some of the stuff that"s come up in the comments. I just want to say that we know that starting antidepressants can lead to an increased rate of suicidal behavior, especially in young people. So it"s not entirely unreasonable to think that there might be a possibility that we might see an increase in violent behavior as well. Also, I don"t think it"s unreasonable to hypothesize that abruptly stopping antidepressants could lead to strange changes in behavior. As terrible as mass shootings are, they are fairly rare, so trying to establish a cause is difficult, at best.

My main complaint in this blog post was just to point out that Robinson sees a mentally ill person on antidepressants commit an act of violence and jumps to the conclusion that the antidepressants were to blame. Furthermore, she does so without evidence. She then goes on to quote a alternative medicine quack that thinks these rare events necessitate a complete ban on these drugs in spite of the fact that they have improved the quality of life for millions of people.

Beetroot As Alternative Medicine

Beetroot As Alternative Medicine

Beetroot has a long history as an alternative medicine in different cultures. To the Romans it was a treatment for constipation and fever. In Eastern Europe it has been used as a remedy for toothache and headache since 1500s. It was fed as a juice or broth to the weak and aged in medieval England. For hundreds of years it was used to treat cancer in Europe.

  1. It keeps the body healthy by boosting the immune system.
  2. It eases haemorrhoids and constipation.
  3. This plant is a blood tonic and a treatment for anemia.
  4. It is a preventative for dementia, high blood pressure and Alzheimer"s disease.
  5. This vegetable is a remedy for digestive disorders such as heartburn, acidity, gastritis and indigestion.
  6. It gives relief to headache and menstrual complaints.

You can take beetroot raw, cooked, boiled, steamed and as a juice or broth. It is safe with zero risks. However, due to its high sugar content it is not suitable for diabetics. As a decongestant it is best taken as a hot soup.

Beetroot juice is often recommended as an anti-cancer food by the alternative health industry. This is based on the cancer treatment success in the 1950s by Hungarian physician Alexander Ferenczi. I must try to eat more beetroot because it is such a powerful alternative medicine.

Sanoviv Treats Parkinson"s Disease, Diagnoses Parkinson"s Disease Symptoms and Provides Parkinson"s Disease Treatments

According to the US National Parkinson"s Foundation, each patient spends an average of $2,500 a year for medications. The total cost is estimated to exceed $5.6 billion annually. About 50,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson"s disease each year, with more than half a million Americans affected at any time.

Sanoviv excels at finding the root cause of Parkinson"s disease symptoms and at treating auto-immune and chronic degenerative diseases. Our whole body, nutrition-based approach and advanced medical treatments allow us to view each patient as a whole person rather than just a series of symptoms and diseases.

Oh, brave new world ...

... that has glider guns in"t!

This is freaking cool. But if Belousov-Zhabotinsky reactions or cellular automata are unfamiliar, don"t go there just yet, read this first.

Wow, I want to explain six different things at once. Where to start.

There"s some amazing chemicals (quite a few different ones) that undergo Belousov-Zhabotinsky reactions, which switch between states. The image shows one such reaction where there"s a cyclical colour change.

If you set up a BZ reaction in a thin layer (say something like a petri dish), then you can observe beautiful cycles of spiral waves.

Very similar spiral waves of excitation are observed, for example, in certain cardiac problems.

Now, to go off in a completely different direction, there are mathematical constructs called cellular automata (CAs).

These are basically a layout of cells - often in a line, or sometimes in a 2-D array (or sometimes even in higher dimensions), which evolve according to simple local rules (such as "if the cells either side of me are both black, next step I will change to white"). The image here is of the development of one such CA, called "Rule 30". As you progress down from the top, each row of the image represents one "time step" in the development of this 1-d cellular automaton.

While they were originally purely mathematical ideas, patterns that arise in essentially the same way, and look very much like those seen in some kinds of cellular automaton do occur in nature, for example, on some kinds of shells:

Further, people have noted in the past that a particular kind of cellular automaton, the cyclic cellular automaton can generate very distinctive spiral waves that look somewhat like BZ spiral waves.

The most famous of these cellular automata is undoubtedly Conway"s game of Life, a 2D one that produces some amazingly intricate patterns.

One very early pattern that was discovered is called a glider - a pattern only a few cells across that changes in such a way that it appears to "fly" diagonally in a straight line.

In 1970, Bill Gosper, in response to a challenge by Conway to find a Life pattern that would show "unlimited growth", designed a constuction that produces a constant stream of gliders, called a "glider gun". (There are a large number of other constructions that exhibit such unlimited growth.)

Using many structures such as this, it has been shown that it is possible to construct a kind of computer that is equivalent to a Turing machine.

In 2005, Motoike and Adamatzky discussed using Belousov-Zhabotinsky reactions in the construction of logic gates in liquids, and there has been a bunch of other related papers.

Now to the new bit. There"s a new paper up on arXiv where a bunch of researchers the University of West of England (including Adamatzky) have constructed, using BZ reactions, a chemical version of a glider gun (it"s not exactly a game-of-life glider gun, but it has similar properties.

As the authors say in their conclusion, "theoretical ideas concerning universal computation in these systems is closer to being realized experimentally. We were able to manipulate glider streams, for example annihilate selected streams and switch periodically between two interacting streams. We were also able to show that glider guns could be formed or annihilated via specific interactions with glider streams from a second gun. We also showed examples where glider guns could be used to implement simple memory analogs."

They also say, "[t]hese discoveries could provide the basis for future designs of collision-based reaction-diffusion computers". Indeed.

There may well be implications relevant to the development of the earliest self-reproducing structures (protolife) on earth.

An Open Letter to my Pharmacy School

Please quit sending me emails about the veterinary therapeutics course. Last I checked, it was illegal for non-vets to prescribe medications for non-human animals. What, exactly, is the point of studying how to treat diseases in animals when animals are considered to be outside both our scope of practice and the scope of practices of physicians we work with? In my state, at the bare minimum, pharmacists aren"t even allowed to sub brand-generic on vet prescriptions. What"s the point?

I will note that I get a lot of calls from a local vet"s office when I"m at work, but most of the time the questions being asked are about drug product availability; sometimes pet meds come in dosages or concentrations that human meds don"t, and it can be difficult to approximate the doses. My cat"s bladder infection was treated with what amounted to an Augmentin 50 mg/5 mL suspension; the least concentrated form available for humans is 200 mg/5 mL, so trying to dose the cat would"ve been practically impossible considering that she was getting about one milliliter of the stuff anyway. And I feel really bad for the family at our pharmacy who apparently splits the tiny-ass 2.5 mg Norvasc tablets in half.

Actually, the most confusing veterinary puzzle is the cat who uses an albuterol inhaler. If I ever see the owner at the store I"m going to ask how in the world that works.

How to Cure Acne Overnight - Here Are the Astonishing Secrets You Have Always Been Looking For

We are always told not to pop, squeeze or even touch them but what can one do to really get rid of them? We always get bombarded by thousands of advertisements of creams and lotions which claim they can help us get rid of acne but do they really work? Well some do and some don"t but do you know that you can naturally get rid of acne overnight without using any of these cosmetic products? Read on to discover some of the most stunning tips on how to cure acne overnight and achieve earth shattering results fast........

First wash your face properly- You must always cleanse your face thoroughly before you start doing anything. For this purpose you must use a good face wash preferably the one"s sold in the market which specifically help you get rid of acne. Once your face is clean dry it with a clean towel and get ready.

Here is the secret- Get a toothpaste and apply a bit of it only on the acne affected area and not the whole face. The one big mistake most people make is that they apply toothpaste on their whole face which causes a lot of irritation and redness of the skin. Only apply it on the affected area and don"t overdo it. Leave it on for some time then wash off with Luke warm water. You must always use a normal white toothpaste and not a gel based toothpaste as that can cause harm.

This is not for sensitive skin- If you have a highly sensitive skin then this solution is not meant for you. If you are not sure about it then you must test it out by applying very tiny amount and see it"s results. If it burns too much then your skin is sensitive.

What you don"t know yet- I know that what I am about to reveal to you can be almost impossible to believe. But it is 100% truth! Do you know what you can cure any sort of acne within 3 days? Seems impossible right? Well see for yourself follow this link- Click Here

We may not torture, but we play Metallica

In the US news, it seems the best stories always slip through the cracks - sometimes even the Daily Show misses them. Here"s one from a few years ago which I just found which seems to have only showed up in the British papers, and no, it is not a joke: Metallica is latest interrogation tactic.

This makes me wonder: Why do they use good music (for the heavy metal part, at least)? Why not just pull out the absolute worst? I guess maybe, since they"re already skirting the line with Metallica, anything worse would cross over into definitely being torture.

Epilobium As Alternative Medicine

Epilobium As Alternative Medicine

Epilobium is mainly an alternative medicine for prostate health. It is often used together with saw palmetto to treat prostate disorders by reducing the production of the male hormone testosterone.

This herb is also used with horsetail or nettle to treat bladder or kidney or urinary tract conditions. It is sold usually in tea or capsule form. Pregnant or nursing women best avoid using epilobium. This herb can reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives, hormone progesterone and hormone replacement therapy. It is also shown to affect the bodys production of the female hormone oestrogen. Epilobium as an alternative medicine is still not very well known by the masses including me.

A Complete Guide to Acupressure: Jin Shin Do

A Complete Guide to Acupressure: Jin Shin Do by Iona Marsaa Teeguarden is an excellent reference to acupressure theory, with complete descriptions of the strange flows and the 12 organ meridians, their functions and interactions. Point locations and descriptions are very good, and the book contains additional information on Source, Luo, and Shu points. Jin Shin Do acupressure is a unique bodymind therapy combining a keen understanding of Oriental physical medicine with Western mind-body concepts from Ericksonian hypnotherapy to Gendlin"s focusing.
A Complete Guide to Acupressure fills the need for something in between simplistic acupressure books and complicated acupuncture texts. Now even more complete, this new edition has been updated to include:
  • JSD as a tool for aiding recovery from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder - a state of hyperarousal following a traumatic experience like an accident, attack, or disaster;
  • Anxiety and insomnia as indications of disturbed Shen, or Spirit, with point combinations integrating traditional acupuncture theory with segmental theory;
  • The Five Elemental Processes as a practical guide to a harmonious relationship with Nature, both around us and within us;
  • JSD acupressure as an adjunct to first aid for athletic injuries in outdoor situations like hiking and wilderness travel.
A clothes-on technique, Jin Shin Do is the author"s unique synthesis of a Japanese acupressure technique, traditional Chinese acupuncture theory, Taoist philosophy, Qigong (breathing exercises), and Western psychological tools. A Complete Guide to Acupressure describes this synthesis in detail, with chapters by Iona and senior Jin Shin Do teachers in the U.S., Canada and Europe. "Jin Shin Do" means "The Way of the Compassionate Spirit," and this book is a treasure house of ways to treat ourselves compassionately.
Accurate, easy to understand and apply, this is the one book to own in order to understand and benefit from acupressure. A must have for practitioners of Dim Mak or Chinese Medicine. This is an important reference book for those interested in Dim Mak, the deadliest Chinese martial art. Highly recommended.

Ideas and recipes: Is your child a picky eater?

If you have a picky eater in the home, its time to change your child and toddler with these ideas and recipes.

Is your child a picky eater? This doesn"t have to be such a bad thing unless they just are not getting enough nutrition to keep them healthy, above all nutrition in the early years makes a foundation for the health of your child in later years. There is such a difference in a child who

doesn"t like spinach and broccoli and just refuses to eat those food. You can always subject other vegetables for these. When you have a child who doesn"t want to eat any vegetables and wants just for example, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and no vegetables then it is time to change things in your home and you can.

When you start a child eating healthy at the youngest age and try all different foods then they are likely to develop a taste for these foods. Please do not tell your child he should not like spinach because you don"t like spinach, then the thought is formed and he thinks well if Mommy doesn"t eat spinach then I don"t need to either. Try to use recipes that incorporate new foods regularly. Try not to preform these ideas in your children as so many parents are doing, just stop picky eater toddlers.

Naturally you don"t want to go through each meal scolding and fussing and worrying about your child and demanding that your child clean his plate, this does not accomplish your goals. First of all limit the high fat and greasy foods your child wants very slowly, and don"t forget you"ll want to also limit the high sugar foods gradually also. Children especially in this present generation are growing up on fast food and very little nutrition, look around you, this is very true, but you don"t have to let your child eat in this manner. Remember you are the parent and this is your child, you are the one forming this child to be a healthy adult.

Try to preplan meals for your family from all the food groups, give them nutritious options even if you start out with small portions and say I want you to try this, you may like it, and sure enough most of the new foods will be accepted and they will like them. Try using complex recipes, and don"t just plop some raw spinach down in front of them. Sure there will be new foods that they don"t accept, wait and try those foods later or perhaps put in a casserole. You can make many casserole dishes with vegetables and even adults don"t notice you have added to the nutrition of the casserole. With time you"ll find foods that children who are picky eaters like.

Try to have a certain schedule for eating each meal whenever possible and limit the in between snacks to healthy foods such as fruit. If your child fills up his tummy with potato chips, for instance, or chocolate candy, naturally he is not going to want to eat at mealtime. This is what is happening so much to children of this generation, as they are allowed to go into the pantry and grab a bag of chips or candies and munch whenever they choose to do so and this is not something that should be allowed. You need to be in charge of the pantry and your recipes and when they are allowed to just munch, nibble and choose the foods they want at any given time.

Another idea would be if the child doesn"t want, for example, a serving of spinach then let him make a decision on either a piece of toast or a bowl of cereal, don"t let him go get chips or make a sandwich of ham and cheese, let the substitute decision be yours, not his and do this only one night a week. With this plan a toddler will look at the food on his plate and know that one night a week you are iving him the decision to choose the cereal or the toast instead of the spinach, he may think well tomorrow night she may prepare something I don"t like more than spinach and just eat the spinach and wait for the next meal to have his once a week decision.

On the foods you are trying to get the child to try make the portion very small, even a tablespoon and you can always give him more if he really likes it and he"ll think of this as a reward, try that, it works. Toddlers like recipes that intimidate thougths of food.

Above all, think about your child and his nutrition needs and his health, remember a child who has proper nutrition misses less school and you make less trips to the doctor and spend less.

Alternative Medicine-1: "Miracles of Water Therapy"

The Japanese Sickness Association confirms that several diseases such as headache, hypertension, obesity, diabetes, arthritis, rheumatism, sinusitis, rhinitis, bronchitis, bronchial asthma, hyper acidity, gastritis, dysentery, constipation, irregular menstruation, uro-genital problems etc are cured by Water Therapy.
Though it sounds incredible, it has been proved factual and is recommended by several doctors as well. Human health depends mainly on the digestive system. As Swami Paramahansa Yogananda said, "It is overeating that leads to most of the diseases. Whereas drinking ordinary potable water helps clean the stomach and enables the intestine to form new fresh blood called "Haemoatopoesis", which in turn fights against the disease-causing organisms. Thus many of the ailments are cured by practising Water Therapy.
How to Practise
The method is simple, easy and inexpensive. Early in the morning, before attending to any of the morning chores, 6 glasses of water (1.26 kg or 1.26 litres) should be taken in one stretch. You may give a short break. Do spot-walking exercise for a few minutes and complete the rest of water. Take necessary precautions against impurities of water. Water should be boiled and cooled, if purity is suspected. For the next 45 minutes to one hour after drinking water, no other beverage or eatable should be taken. After supper, one should not have any stimulating beverage or soft drink.
During the first few days of therapy, one may pass urine 3-4 times within one hour after drinking water. Some may have even loose stools. But in a short period, everything comes back to normalcy and symptoms of relief from the disease will be seen.
Persons suffering from arthritis and rheumatism should take Water Therapy three times a day in the first week and thereafter practise it once a day. While practising water therapy, water should be taken two hours after each meal and not before that.
Experiments show that the following diseases be cured in the stipulated period mentioned in brackets: Hypertension (one month), Diabetes (one to two weeks), Gastritis (one week), Constipation (one or two days).

OZONE THERAPY---Explained

Okay, what the hec is it anyway? You may have heard the term but are not really up on what it is. There are so many sites, all of them proclaiming Valhalla, that it can be confusing. There are some good and some bad and most just plain commercial. If I try to define it here I will be doing the entire field a disservice. I do not want to trivialize a therapy that can save lives. The question you want to keep asking, as you peruse this site is, "Why doesn"t the FDA approve this ozone therapy once and for all and let Americans have what Germans, Russians and even Cubans now have access to?"

I reviewed OxygenMedicine.com. This is an excellent site, (at least I found it very enlightening), to get you acquainted with the subject. It ranges from simple to somewhat difficult as far as the papers and essays go, but it has all you need from various experts to become dangerously knowleageble in the field, (maybe more so than your doctor even). See what you think.

Toxic Ginseng

One of the dangers with "herbal" medicine, is that you never really know what it is that you are getting. This danger was made even clearer on December 16th when the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) had to seize imported Ginseng that was contaminated with pesticide chemicals, including procymidone and quintozene.

There is no declared safe limit for these two chemicals in food. As a result the FDA have obtained a court order to seize the Ginseng and warn consumers that the contaminated Ginseng is currently on the market. It is not known how widespread the contaminated Ginseng has been distributed.

The contamination was first discovered on July 23rd with a warning being issued on October 4th. A further warning was issued October 21st, but it appears that the company did not comply with the requests of the FDA, requiring firmer action to be taken.

With the time lag between the discovery of the contamination and the seizing of the Ginseng, I can only wonder how many people have been affected by this product. Particularly when the toxic fact-sheet for procymidone advises it can affect male fertility and is unsafe to unborn babies. Proof again that "Natural" and "Safe" are not the same thing.

Under the DSHEA Act, this Ginseng is classed as a food and not a medicinal product. Therefore, it is not required to be tested prior to sale, nor is it required to be proven effective at treating any health condition.

"There is only one truth. How we interpret that truth is called belief."

"The presence of belief, does not indicate the existence of truth."

How To-54: "How to Prepare for a Health Insurance Physical"

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

When you are applying for Health Insurance, you will need to visit the doctor"s office for a physical. Make sure you are in top shape to pass, by reading these simple tips.

Steps

  1. Stop smoking. This is the single most effective way to reduce your health care premiums. Having nicotine in your system (which can be detected in a urine sample for up to 14 days for smokers, even occasional ones, will get you the worst ranking from actuaries. Even if you are a complete non-smoker, a single instance of smoking, such as trying one cigar with the guys at a poker party, is enough to skew your lab results.
  2. Stop eating. A two-day fast before the exam will dramatically decrease those bad lipids (cholesterol) in your bloodstream. But a two day fast is hardly good for your health. Rather, fast from midnight the night before. You will have more favorable blood sugar and lipid levels than if you had just eaten a big, heavy breakfast. For several days prior to the exam, eat lots of fiber and drink plenty of fluids to flush out your system.
  3. Treat high blood pressure. Stop by a drugstore and spend 50 cents to test your blood pressure on one of those automated machines. If it"s high, go to a doctor and treat it immediately. Although you will have to disclose this on your application, you will still be better off with a lowered blood pressure rating. And to those who say "let your conscience be your guide" as to disclosing any medication taken, remember that material misrepresentation, or FRAUD, may come back and bite you weeks or years down the line when your "oversight" is discovered and your coverage is cancelled when you most need it.
  4. Lay down for your EKG. Many times an examiner for both life and health insurance exams will want to give you an EKG. In the event that they start to administer the test while you are sitting, ask if you can lay down for the test so you can fully relax. Many times this will have a favorable effect on your test results.
  5. Lay off the Pain medication. Many people are excessively free with over the counter headache and pain relievers such as Advil and Tylenol, to name two. All medications taken have an effect on your liver. A healthy person at a good weight with no health problems may still be declined for insurance due to elevated liver function levels.
  6. Watch what you eat. Who doesn"t remember the episode from Seinfeld when Elaine fails her employer"s drug testing and later finds out that it is all due to a poppy seed bagel eaten the day before. Believe it or not, poppy seeds can actually skew your results -- and not in a favorable way! Lay off the poppy seed bagels, cake etc. for at least a week before your exam.
  7. Clean up. Although rates are not determined simply by your appearance, it does you no harm to look clean and well groomed. Hopefully you will have been living a healthy lifestyle and monitoring your weight, blood pressure and other key factors. If not, remember that most of those illicit drugs, as well as alcohol, show up in urine (alcohol, up to 12 hours; pot, 30 days for chronic users; and everything else, four days).

Warnings

  • Starving yourself for two days may not be the smartest way to lower your cholesterol. Try eating healthy, low-fat, low-cholesterol foods for two days instead. Remember, your brain needs glucose!

The "2007 Bio-Logic Aqua Research International Symposium on Occupational Health and Eyesight Wellness Responsibility" will comprise an international consortium of prominent ophthalmologists, scientists, researchers, occupational health specialists, industry analysts and more. Sharon Kleyne envisions the symposium as a crucial way to raise awareness and educate people about the emergent threats to occupational health and to introduce new therapies for eyesight wellness, which she sees as a growing global health crisis. As Founder & Chairman of Bio-Logic Aqua Research -- the only company worldwide specializing solely in advanced topical hydrotherapies using ultra-pure tissue culture grade water for pharmaceutical applications -- Kleyne is already seen as a visionary in the field of these new technologies and in the overall arena of eyesight wellness responsibility. Safe, sterile, all natural and chemical/preservative free, her company"s widely distributed, signature product, Nature"s Tears EyeMist, represents a paradigm-shifting breakthrough application for the tear film and dry eyes.

Among the factors Kleyne cites as major threats compromising occupational health and eyesight wellness are workplace and home environments with low air humidity, poor room ventilation, pollution, dust, wall and window insulation, fluorescent lighting, computer and television screens, forced air heating and cooling and much more. "Unfortunately, too many dry eye symptoms either go unnoticed or are not recognized as originating in the eyes," Kleyne says, "In addition to obvious symptoms such as irritation, itching and burning, dry eye symptoms can include stress, chronic fatigue, frequent allergies and colds, a dread of going to work, easy distraction, etc. These can lead to depression, poor health and lost productivity. Eye dehydration often precedes environmentally caused problems of the skin, mouth, lungs and body."

"While adults and many seniors have adjusted to this emerging artificial, digital world, our children," adds Kleyne, "are completely submersed in it. Prolonged and increasing usage of digital devices in man-made environments is causing eye stress and impacting pediatric vision development. The long-term eye health ramifications are simply not known. The current evidence strongly suggests the need for new approaches to occupational health and aggressive behavioral adjustments for improving eyesight wellness. Something is happening to all of us, and we need to study it carefully."

To that end, Sharon Kleyne and Grants Pass, Oregon-based Bio-Logic Aqua Research (the topical hydrotherapy sciences division of Bio-Logic Aqua Technologies Corporation) is leading into 2007 -- The Year Of Eyesight Wellness -- with the Jan. 30 unveiling of the symposium "2007 Bio-Logic Aqua Research International Symposium on Occupational Health and Eyesight Wellness Responsibility."

How To Deal With Stress?

Do you always feel you are stress? Too much stress can kill. It is a feeling that"s created when we react to particular events. But there are things you can do to minimize stress and manage the stress that"s unavoidable. The human body responds to stressors by activating the nervous system and specific hormones. This natural reaction is known as the stress response.

Working properly, the body"s stress response enhances a person"s ability to perform well under pressure. But the stress response can also cause problems when it overreacts or fails to turn off and reset itself properly. The stress response (also called the fight or flight response) is critical during emergency situations, such as when a driver has to slam on the brakes to avoid an accident.

A little of this stress can help keep you on your toes, ready to rise to a challenge. But stress doesn"t always happen in response to things that are immediate or that are over quickly. Ongoing or long-term events, like coping with a divorce or moving to a new neighborhood or school, can cause stress, too. Long-term stressful situations can produce a lasting, low-level stress that"s hard on people.

The nervous system senses continued pressure and may remain slightly activated and continue to pump out extra stress hormones over an extended period. For example, feeling a little stress about a test that"s coming up can motivate you to study hard. But stressing out too much over the test can make it hard to concentrate on the material you need to learn. Pressures that are too intense or last too long, or troubles that are shouldered alone, can cause people to feel stress overload.

Why are so many Republicans delusional?

I was watching Washington Journal on C-SPAN yesterday (sorry, their video server is down, so no link), when one of the callers said he could never vote for Obama because "he"s convinced that there"s Muslim money behind him." This seems to refer to some vague notion that he"s a Manchurian Muslim or in the pocket of a conspiracy run by some sinister, shadowy Jews Muslims. It"s similar, of course, to the claim that was being pushed by FOX News and the Republican Party a few months ago that Obama was himself a Muslim. My mother works with a guy that"s also convinced Arabs have been plotting to put Obama in office for years.

You"ll find conservatives are pushing the line that Obama isn"t even African-American, he"s really Arab-American. I guess being black isn"t Muslim-scary enough. Here we see it at GOPUSA:

[Obama] is the illegitimate son of a Kenyan Arab; not of an American Black (so we dont owe him apologies for slavery); and stepson of an Indonesian Moslem. Obama was a Moslem studying the Koran in a Madrassa when he was 10 and listed as a Moslem in his Catholic school later on.

Here is The Conservative Voice:

Does Arab ancestry explain Obama"s Palestinian sympathy and opposition to deposing Saddam Hussein by force? ...

The Senator"s background is: Caucasian from his mother [and] Arab African from his father. Before all the Obamiacs jump on the answer, the Kenyan Obamas are listed in the Kenyan census as Arab African not as Tribal "Black" African. His father"s great great grandmother was a Tribal African.

"Therefore by ethnic lines the Senator is 50% Caucasian, 43.75% Arab, and 6.25% Black African (from where the Senator gets his skin pigmentation).

Here"s a picture of Obama with his "non-black" father:

Here"s one blogger of some renown again claiming Obama is of Arab descent. Here"s a commentator at World Net Daily (color me surprised) insinuating, as recently as September, that Obama really is a Muslim.

These people are clearly delusional. This stuff is so easily debunked, and has been so thoroughly debunked that their claims fall apart under even the most trivial of examination. So why is it so persistent?

But my larger question is why is this sort of lunacy particularly a Republican phenomenon? You don"t see influential forces on the Democratic side speculating about whether McCain was turned by the Viet Cong during his capture and that he really is a Manchurian candidate. You don"t see people suggesting that Sarah Palin"s having spent her life within sight of Russia has made her into a Communist, her socialist redistribution of Alaskan oil monies notwithstanding. Honestly, I don"t have an answer, why is it that this kind of foolishness is a purely Republican phenomenon?
